Description |
Manuscript Notenbüchlein (tune booklet) with paperboard covers (covered in block-printed paper) and a leather spine. Contains bookplate: "Dieses Harmonische Melodeyen \ Buechlein ueber die bekade lieder hoeret mir \ Joseph Schleifer \ sing schueler in der Lower Milforter schule geschrieben \ den 5ten Tag december \ 1806, [This harmonious tune booklet for the best known songs belongs to me, Joseph Slifer, singing scholar in the Lower Milford school. Written the 5th day of December 1806]." The ownership text is in fraktur lettering, mostly red, with yellow fill in the capitals of the name, and green between lines, in the bottom half of a three ring circle at the center of the plate. The top half contains a proverbial verse about the shortness of life. The rings of the circle are yellow, green and red with black highlights. On either side, bands around the circle contain a verse from the hymn "Wilst du in der stille singen... (verse 3, pg. 222 in the Marburger Gesangbuch, Philadelphia, 1799) in red fraktur lettering with green highlights. From these bands radiate thin bands of red and green alternating, filling the rest of the page to the border. A green-red-and-white border surrounds, with patterns in the side borders. The next page features semitones and thirds noted on scores, along with a probationis [practice] tune: "Jesulein, Bleibe mein...". Contains 91 numbered tunes, followed by 51 unnumbered tunes. The first page of tunes (#1-8) is missing. Tunes up to #64 are in a standard format of four tunes to a page with the first line of a hymn above each, arranged alphabetically. Each page has the corresponding letter of the alphabet at the top left corner in red (except for the last three pages, letters O, S and W). In this section, a bass or alto part is often added in red. Beginning with #65, the tunes are no longer alphabetical and additional parts are generally written as separate lines (some tunes are three-part). Almost all entries appear to be by the same hand. |
