Description |
A ladies handstitched petticoat comprised of red wool serge. The petticoat is wide with cartridge pleating at the waist. There is a printed black and taupe cotton used for the waistband with a single button closure at the back. The petticoat is also gored and there are four tucks located above the decorated hem. The scalloped hem has applied black wool embroidery similar to soutache. This style of petticoat was called a Balmoral petticoat, fashioned by Queen Victoria. The hem was decorated because it was usually seen underneath the top (drawn up) skirt worn during walking and sporting activities, such as skating. |
