Description |
A box constructed out of fabric-covered paperboard and decorated with silk embroidery with a detached pincushion lid decorated with wool needlepoint. a) The detached lid is structured out of card and covered in solid red wool twill and trimmed in green silk ribbon with an attached silk rosette at the corners (although the lower right rosette is missing). In the middle there is a rectangular panel with a cream wool needlepoint ground, a flower motif in red, pink, white and green wool and the year "1848" in red wool. The panel is framed with the same green ribbon. There has also been batting inserted inside the lid. There is a small piece of 1/8" wide black silk ribbon stitched to the middle of one side which is used as a closure. The reverse of the lid was made using a repurposed cream cotton piece, that still features the embroidered name "Lydia" and the date "1832" both in black wool. b) The rectangular box is also structured from card and covered in a jacquard woven black wool. On each panel there is a wool embroidered floral motifs in the center. Use of green, pink, red, blue, yellow and olive green wool yarns were used in chain stitch. Each edge is trimmed in red silk ribbon and then handstitched together to form the shape of the box. The entire inside is lined with the same cotton material with further black wool embroidered motifs, including the name "Lydia Schultz" and a chain-stitched heart with the inscription: "All by love and nothing by force." The bottom of the box is covered with a cream cotton with a blue, green, brown and orange woven check. |
