Description |
A man's military or ceremonial jacket, styled similarly to a Zouave jacket. The jacket is comprised mainly of blue wool serge with pieced red wool serge panels in the front. There is a slightly high rounded neckline trimmed with peach (faded) wool tape trim. The red panels are also flanked by an application of the peach wool tape trim and adorned with ten decorative brass buttons on either side (missing five buttons total). The opening of the jacket and the hem is bound with an application of the same peach tape trim. The jacket has a center front button closure comprised of nine brass buttons (missing one button). The long sleeves are set into the arm syce with a red wool cuff and application of the peach wool tape. There are also two decorative brass buttons at each cuff. Applied to the chest and draping down to the hem is an applied soutache design of the peach wool trim. The "trefoil" design is often seen on the original Zouave jackets of Algeria and Morocco. Zouave styles became popular in the 1850s-1860s as a result of the Crimean War (1856-1858). The jacket is lined in a bleached plain weave linen and there is an interior slit pocket the waist. The jacket is machine constructed with hand finishing details. |
